Fluffy Cardamom Cinnamon Rolls

There's nothing quite like waking up to the smell of freshly baked cinnamon rolls, especially when they have a twist of cardamom. This recipe holds a special place in my heart as it's inspired by a family tradition of baking these warm, comforting treats every Sunday morning.

Cardamom adds a unique and aromatic depth to the classic cinnamon roll, making them irresistibly delicious. The secret to their fluffiness lies in the proofing process, which allows the dough to rise perfectly.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup whole milk
  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter
  • 2 1/4 teaspoons active dry yeast
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 tablespoons ground cinnamon
  • 1 tablespoon ground cardamom
  • 1/3 cup brown sugar
  • 1/4 cup melted butter (for filling)
  • 1 cup powdered sugar
  • 2 tablespoons milk (for glaze)

Method

  1. Warm the milk and butter together until melted and let it cool to about 110°F. Stir in sugar and yeast; let sit until foamy, about 5 minutes.
  2. In a large bowl, combine the yeast mixture with eggs, salt, and 2 cups of flour. Gradually add remaining flour and knead until smooth.
  3. Cover the dough and let it rise in a warm place until doubled, about 1 hour.
  4. Roll out the dough into a rectangle, spread with melted butter, and sprinkle with brown sugar mixed with cinnamon and cardamom.
  5. Roll up the dough tightly, cut into 12 even pieces, place them in a greased baking dish, and let them rise for another 30 minutes.
  6. Preheat the oven to 350°F. Bake the rolls for 25 minutes or until golden brown.
  7. Mix powdered sugar with milk to make the glaze, and drizzle over warm rolls before serving.

Tips for Success

Ensure your yeast is fresh and active for the best rise. If you want a stronger cardamom flavor, add a pinch more to the filling.

Don't rush the proofing time; let the dough double in size for the fluffiest results.
