  • 1/4 cup packed light brown sugar
  • 1 tablespoon all-purpose flour or cornstarch
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground cloves or allspice
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour (for topping)
  • 1/2 cup rolled oats
  • 1/2 cup packed light brown sugar
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, very cold and cut into cubes
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon

Method
 

  1. Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C).
  2. Combine sliced apples with sugars, flour, spices, lemon juice, and melted butter. Toss well and let sit for 10-15 minutes.
  3. Prepare crumb topping by combining flour, oats, brown sugar, salt, and cinnamon. Cut in cold butter until crumbly.
  4. Transfer apple mixture into a buttered baking dish and spread evenly.
  5. Top evenly with crumb mixture. Bake for 35-45 minutes, until topping is golden brown and apples are bubbling.
  6. Cool for 15-20 minutes before serving. Serve warm with vanilla ice cream or whipped cream.
