Ingredients

  • 1 cup whole milk warmed to 110°F
  • 2 1/4 teaspoons active dry yeast 1 packet
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 large egg room temperature
  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter melted and cooled
  • 3 1/2 cups all-purpose flour plus more for kneading
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter melted, for brushing

Method

  1. In a large bowl, combine warm milk, yeast, and sugar. Stir gently and let stand for 5-10 minutes until foamy.
  2. Add the egg and melted butter to the yeast mixture. Gradually add flour and salt, mixing until a soft dough forms.
  3. Turn dough onto a lightly floured surface and knead for 8-10 minutes until smooth and elastic. Place in a greased bowl, cover with a damp towel, and let rise in a warm place for 1 hour or until doubled in size.
  4. Punch down dough and divide into 12 equal pieces. Shape each piece into a smooth ball and place in a greased 9x13-inch baking pan, spacing evenly.
  5. Cover rolls with a towel and let rise for 30-45 minutes until puffy and touching each other.
  6. Preheat oven to 375°F. Bake rolls for 16-18 minutes until golden brown on top.
  7. Remove from oven and immediately brush tops with melted butter. Serve warm.

Notes

For extra soft rolls, use bread flour instead of all-purpose flour. Make sure your milk is not too hot or it will kill the yeast. These rolls can be made ahead and frozen after baking; reheat in a 300°F oven for 10 minutes.
