Ingredients

  • 3 cups watermelon cubed
  • 1 cup strawberries hulled and halved
  • 1 cup sprite or lemon-lime soda chilled
  • 1 cup milk cold
  • 2 tablespoons condensed milk
  • 1 cup ice cubes
  • 1/4 cup blueberries optional
  • 2 tablespoons honey optional, for extra sweetness

Method

  1. Cut the watermelon into bite-sized cubes and hull and halve the strawberries. Place all the fruit in a large serving bowl.
  2. In a separate bowl, combine the cold milk and condensed milk. Whisk together until the condensed milk is fully dissolved and the mixture is smooth.
  3. Pour the chilled sprite or lemon-lime soda into the milk mixture and gently stir to combine. Be careful not to stir too vigorously to preserve the carbonation.
  4. Pour the milk and soda mixture over the prepared fruit in the serving bowl. Add ice cubes to keep everything cold and refreshing.
  5. If desired, add blueberries for extra color and drizzle honey over the top for additional sweetness. Gently stir to distribute the ingredients.
  6. Let the hwachae sit in the refrigerator for 5-10 minutes to allow the flavors to meld together. Serve immediately in individual bowls or glasses with a spoon.

Notes

For the best flavor, use very cold ingredients and serve immediately after mixing. You can substitute the milk with coconut milk or almond milk for a dairy-free version. Add the soda just before serving to maintain maximum fizziness and freshness.
