Ingredients

  • 4 cups whole milk or milk of choice
  • 1/2 cup heavy whipping cream cold
  • 1/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder divided
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar divided
  • 4 ounces dark chocolate chopped
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 pinch salt
  • 2 tablespoons powdered sugar for whipped topping

Method

  1. In a mixing bowl, combine heavy whipping cream, 2 tablespoons cocoa powder, and powdered sugar. Whip with an electric mixer on high speed until stiff peaks form, about 3-4 minutes. Refrigerate until ready to use.
  2. In a medium saucepan, heat the milk over medium heat until it begins to steam but not boil, about 3-4 minutes.
  3. Reduce heat to low and whisk in the remaining 2 tablespoons cocoa powder, granulated sugar, chopped dark chocolate, and salt. Stir continuously until the chocolate is completely melted and the mixture is smooth.
  4. Remove from heat and stir in vanilla extract. Whisk vigorously for 30 seconds to create a frothy texture.
  5. Pour the hot chocolate into mugs, filling them about three-quarters full.
  6. Generously dollop the whipped cocoa cream on top of each mug. The cream will slowly melt into the hot chocolate. Serve immediately and enjoy while hot.

Notes

For an extra indulgent version, add a splash of peppermint extract or a pinch of cinnamon to the hot chocolate. Make sure the whipping cream is very cold for best whipping results. You can prepare the whipped topping up to 2 hours in advance and keep it refrigerated until serving.
