Frozen Watermelon Basil Electrolyte Slush

When summer heat hits hard, I want something icy, refreshing, and actually good for me. This frozen watermelon basil slush is my go-to: it's like a grown-up slushie that replenishes electrolytes without any artificial junk. The combination of juicy watermelon, fragrant basil, and a pinch of sea salt is shockingly delicious.

Watermelon is over 90% water and naturally rich in potassium, while a touch of maple syrup adds quick energy and a squeeze of lime wakes everything up. Basil adds a subtle herbal note that makes it feel fancy—yet it's ready in minutes. Blend, sip, and feel instantly revived.

Ingredients

  • 4 cups frozen watermelon chunks (about 1/2 small seedless watermelon)
  • 1/4 cup fresh basil leaves, packed
  • 1 cup cold water or coconut water
  • 2 tablespoons fresh lime juice (about 1 lime)
  • 1 tablespoon pure maple syrup (or to taste)
  • 1/8 teaspoon fine sea salt
  • 1 cup ice cubes (optional, if watermelon isn’t frozen)
  • Fresh basil sprigs and lime wheels, for garnish

Method

  1. Add frozen watermelon, basil leaves, water (or coconut water), lime juice, maple syrup, and sea salt to a high-speed blender.
  2. If using unfrozen watermelon, add ice cubes now. Blend on high for 30–45 seconds until completely smooth and slushy.
  3. Taste and adjust sweetness with more maple syrup or tartness with extra lime juice. Blend again for 5 seconds if needed.
  4. Pour into 2 tall glasses and garnish with fresh basil sprigs and lime wheels. Serve immediately with a wide straw.

Tips for the Perfect Slush

Use frozen watermelon chunks for the thickest, slushiest texture. If you only have fresh, add a handful of ice cubes and blend until smooth. For a sweeter drink, add another teaspoon of maple syrup; for a tangier kick, more lime.

Feel free to swap basil for mint or add a few fresh mint leaves for a mojito vibe. For an extra electrolyte boost, use coconut water instead of plain water.
